THE AREA
One of the most unspoiled resort islands in the Caribbean, tiny Anguilla
is still governed by Britain. In fact, the island once fought a "revolution"
to remain under British rule. With its turquoise waters and long stretches
of white sand beach, Anguilla attracts yachtsmen and beachcombers alike;
the island's southern coast is particularly noted for its many long
palm-fringed beaches. Anguilla offers excellent snorkeling, and for
scuba divers, there are large coral reefs off the west and northwest
coasts of the island. Other popular pursuits include windsurfing, deep-sea
fishing, and exploring the caves in the island's interior -- some decorated
with fascinating pre-Columbian petroglyphs.
