THE AREA
While other islands boast large resorts and nonstop activity, Anguilla's greatest charms are its small scale and pristine white sand beaches. Dozens of different beaches ring this tiny island, which lies about 8 miles north of St. Martin in the Leeward Islands. Low-lying Anguilla is surrounded with coral reefs-some only 10 yards offshore-and watersports are the favorite activity, with excellent swimming, snorkeling and diving in the clear, turquoise seas. Sailing and windsurfing are available, as well.

A British territory, Anguilla enjoys more or less complete independence, and it is a friendly, low-key alternative to some of its more bustling neighbors. Also, despite its small size, Anguilla offers some excellent restaurants (lobster is a specialty) and a variety of bars and clubs, popular with both visitors and locals.

THE PROPERTIES
