THE AREA
If you want to experience the unique environment of the rain forest but also enjoy time on the beach, there are few areas better than Quepos, in the southern part of Costa Rica. Located about 100 miles west of the capital city of San Jose, Quepos is the gateway to Manuel Antonio National Park, perhaps the best known of Costa Rica's many parks. Manuel Antonio is a natural wonderland, where the dense rain forest comes right down to the ocean, meeting several beautiful beaches. Monkeys, sloths, colorful tropical birds, and other wildlife species live here in abundance - and the jungle plants and flowers are equally amazing. Quepos itself is a small fishing village with a variety of shops, as well as restaurants (often located in hotels).

Guided hikes are available in the park. Locally, you can also arrange for horseback riding, deep-sea fishing, whitewater rafting, and even rain forest canopy tours.

THE PROPERTIES
Our properties in this area are ocated along the coastal highway, from the national park north toward Quepos. Along this 5-10 mile stretch of road, you can find a variety of well-maintained apartments, most with shared pools, and a few private villas with their own pools. The typical apartment features a terrace for outdoor living. Most properties are in elevated positions in the relatively steep hills set back from the water, providing spectacular sea views at many locations. A few apartments are just a short walk from the beach or enjoy beach access.

To get to Quepos, take the 20-minute flight from San Jose and rent a car when you arrive; or drive three to four hours from San Jose on a scenic road that winds through the mountains and along the coast. Four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended for Costa Rica's rugged terrain - although the roads around Quepos are better (and more often paved) than in the Tamarindo area, to the north.

INTERIORS
Villas and apartments off 1-4 bedroom(s), 1-3 bathroom(s), living room, dining area, and fully equipped kitchen. Studio apartments are also available. Nearly all include a terrace or balcony. Furnishings range from simple to very comfortable. Many properties are equipped with air-conditioning, ceiling fans, microwave, dishwasher, and other amenities.
HIGHLIGHTS
Attractive, modern villas and apartments in and around the fishing village of Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park - a top ecotourism destination, where the rain forest meets the beach.
