THE AREA
The Atlantic coast of France starts just south of Brittany and extends down to the Spanish border near Biarritz. Less known to overseas visitors than the Côte d'Azur, the sunny Atlantic coast is a favorite destination for the French when they take their own holidays.

The northern part of the coast offers a string of resorts and beaches along an indented coastline. Good beaches abound near the fishing port of Les Sables d'Olonne and the lively resort of La Rochelle, with its picturesque harbor and sidewalk cafés (a bridge connects the town to the much sought-after Ile de Ré and even more fine beaches). The resorts here offer lots of children's activities; outdoor sports such as sailing, windsurfing, riding, and golf; and a little nightlife, especially in the larger towns. Inland is the famous wine-producing area around Bordeaux.

From Bordeaux south to Biarritz is the Landes area, where the long, straight coastline offers nearly 100 miles of sandy beach, fringed by pine forests. And in the far south is Biarritz, a classic resort with a casino, an elegant beachfront promenade, and a sometimes turbulent sea that attracts surfers. It is also a gateway to the Basque country-a distinctive part of France, home of a proud and ancient culture.

THE PROPERTIES
We feature homes in most locations along the Atlantic coast, including all of the better-known beach resorts and the area of inland lakes near Arcachon. Most homes are within easy reach of the beach, or no more than 15-20 minutes' drive. Your choices include attractive modern villas and apartments, and renovated stone farmhouses or cottages, often with original details such as exposed stone walls and beamed ceilings. Some villas in this area feature private pools. Our inland properties are usually an hour or less from the coast, and include some homes amid the luxuriant vineyards of the Bordeaux region. A few châteaux and manor houses are also available. For a very affordable inland property (still within reach of the coast), consider a gîte, an inexpensive home in the nationwide French system of private farm cottages and other rural homes. Properties include 1-4 bedroom(s), 1-3 or more bathroom(s), living room, dining area, and fully equipped kitchen. Furnishings and decor vary according to the individual owners; some are simple, others are more luxurious, sometimes with amenities such as dishwasher and washing machine.
