THE AREA
The Pyrénées, the towering snow-capped peaks that separate France from Spain, give their name to one of the less well-known but most rewarding parts of France. The traveler here can discover unspoiled, traditional villages, plus the peaks and forests of Europe's second-highest mountain range (the Alps are highest). The region stretches from near Biarritz, on the Atlantic coast, all the way to the Mediterranean coast near Perpignan.

Toulouse is the main city in this area-a thriving, modern metropolis that surrounds a historic city center where Renaissance mansions still stand. Other characteristic communities here are bastides, medieval villages laid out around a market square. A day trip could take you to Albi (45 miles northeast of Toulouse) and its fortress-like cathedral; the Armagnac area, where a brandy that rivals cognac is produced; or, right in the heart of the mountains, the world-famous pilgrimage site of Lourdes. At the higher elevations, you will also find ski areas, lakes, trails, hot springs and spas. You can even step into another country-tiny Andorra, high in the Pyrénées.

THE PROPERTIES
Our homes in the Pyrénées include some wonderful stone farmhouses or cottages and converted barns-some are centuries old-with comfortable country furnishings. A few attractive modern villas are also available. Choose from locations in the countryside or in villages, including some picturesque homes right in the center of medieval towns such as Conques and Najac. Some of the larger country properties have swimming pools, and typical views include the forested mountains and surrounding countryside. In the Pyrénées, we feature a large number of gîtes, inexpensive properties in the nationwide French system of private farm cottages and other rural homes.
