AREA One of the world's great cities, historic London, is home to such landmarks as Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace. For connoisseurs of the arts, there are wonderful museums -- the British Museum and Tate Gallery among them. And London's famous theatre district enjoys international renown. North of Regent's Park, northwest London offers a succession of attractive residential neighborhoods. This exclusive area extends from St. John's Wood in the south, through Belsize Park, to Hampstead in the north. It is bounded on one side by West Hampstead, and on the other by Highgate. Each area has a slightly different character. The "village" of Hampstead has long been a part of greater London; it has a literary reputation and has been home to generations of artists and writers. Closer to the city center, there is Belsize Park, which offers a scattering of good local cafés and restaurants, and affluent St. John's Wood, most of which is within walking distance of Regent's Park.
