This imposing four-story villa stands on the western shores of Lake Como, in the village of Santa Maria Rezzonico (a picturesque village that has decorated the cover of a guidebook and National Geographic magazine). It is rare to find such a large home in the Italian Lakes; this villa was built on a grand scale in the mid-1800s by Milanese aristocrats, and the decor features antiques and fine paintings. The villa looks southeast across all three branches of the lake, with mountains in the distance-a classic view. There is an ornamental pond on the grounds, and stately old oak, cedar, and palm trees tower over the lush green lawns. Behind the villa is a tennis court , good for a casual game (though not professional quality). This spacious property comprises 8 bedrooms (2 double, 5 twin, 1 single), 6 bathrooms and 2 WCs, living room with fireplace and pool table, dining room, entrance hall, fully equipped kitchen, and several veranda sitting rooms and terraces. The living room opens onto the lawn overlooking the lake. Two of the twin rooms are smaller rooms in the former 4th-floor servants' quarters; this floor has its own sitting/dining room and kitchenette. VILLA DI CASTELLO nr. Varenna for 7-11 Lake Como's beauty has enchanted generations of visitors, including Hermann Hesse, who described Villa di Castello's gorgeous setting in his book of Italian travels. The villa is less than half a mile from Varenna, an attractive lakeside village with many gardens, and about 12 miles north of the town of Lecco. From this property, perched high above the eastern side of Lake Como, you can see all three arms of the lake. The views are exceptional and panoramic. The villa and another house behind it are part of a 100-acre working farm that includes an ancient castle. The two homes share a swimming pool ; also on the grounds is the clay tennis court of a local club, available by arrangement (no charge). The main villa includes 4 bedrooms (1 double, 2 twin, 1 single), 2 bathrooms plus pool shower/bathroom, living and dining rooms, study, fully equipped kitchen, and outdoor dining terrace. The furnishings are tasteful and traditional. A top-floor suite for 2-4 has a bedroom with a small double and 2 single beds, sitting room, bathroom, and kitchenette; this suite is available starting at an additional $1000/week.
