THE AREA
Northern Italy is a region of beautiful lakes, of which Lake Garda (about 15 miles west of Verona) is the largest. Citrus, olive, and palm trees flourish in the mild climate here, and traditional two-masted fishing boats still ply the deep blue waters of the lake. Long, narrow, almost fjord-like in appearance, Lake Garda's sweeping vistas have attracted artists, writers, and discerning travellers for centuries. For visitors, the town of Garda offers the perfect base for exploring the region. This active fishing port is set on the southeastern shore of the lake, and is built on Roman ruins. From Garda, there are countless possibilities for day trips. To the west is the classic lakeside resort of Gardone Riviera; southeast is the historic city of Verona; and Padua and Venice are easily accessible for longer day trips.
