THE AREA
With its shining blue waters and romantic islands, Lake Maggiore has charmed visitors for centuries. Its major resort town, Stresa, is about 50 miles northwest of Milan (close enough for day trips), and about the same distance west of Lake Como. Lake Maggiore is nearly 40 miles from north to south; its upper end lies in Switzerland, in the mountainous Ticino canton-another tempting destination for a day trip. Along the lakeshore, you find lavish villas (some open to the public), lush botanical gardens, and one enchanting view after another.

Toward the southern end of the lake, the elegant old town of Stresa is home to grand hotels and fine restaurants. It is also a departure point for boat trips to the Borromean Islands, which are visible from shore. Isola Bella and Isola Madre provide romantic settings for 17th-century palaces and gardens, while Isola dei Pescatori has remained a traditional island of fishermen.
