THE AREA
Less well known than Lake Maggiore, its larger neighbor to the east, Lake Orta is one of the jewels of the Italian Lake District. Its prettiest village, Orta San Giulio, is on the lake's eastern shores, at the tip of a promontory. The atmosphere here is old-fashioned and unhurried, with the village kept virtually car-free. Instead of traffic, you find quiet, stair-stepped streets and alleyways, a central piazza with sidewalk cafes, and an old town hall adorned with frescoes. Boat trips can take you to the tiny island of San Giulio and its 4th-century church, a delightful excursion.

Orta San Giulio is only 12 miles west of Lake Maggiore and the elegant old resort of Stresa, making it an excellent alternative to stays in that busier area. And, at about 45 miles northwest of Milan, Orta is close enough for day trips to that city's museums and incomparable shopping districts.

We offer a small number of apartments in and around Orta San Giulio, some with views of the lake. The typical location is within easy walking distance of the village center. For those arriving with cars, a visitors' parking area is available.
