THE AREA
Berne is the capital of Switzerland and one of its leading commercial
centers. Situated on a picturesque rocky bluff, Berne is surrounded
on three sides by the Aare River, a tributary of the Rhine. The heart
of the city is its Old Town, a centuries-old historic district. The
city's medieval architecture is astonishingly well preserved-in fact,
Berne is the only Swiss city honored as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage
Site. Among the city's landmarks are a 15th-century cathedral, the beloved
medieval clock tower, and four miles of historic arcades-one of Europe's
longest shopping promenades.
Centrally located
in Switzerland, Berne offers a convenient base for day trips to the
beautiful lakeside resorts around Interlaken and Lucerne. A 30-minute
drive brings you to the Alps; full day trips are possible to Zermatt,
the Matterhorn, and other destinations among the peaks and glaciers.
