Situated in the quiet hamlet of Magny, two kilometres from Châtel Censoir, the terraced gardens of Le Moulin Magny descend towards the wooded banks of the River Yonne with the Canal du Nivernais beyond. A recently restored 18th century millhouse, Le Moulin Magny sleeps up to nine people and a baby.
Cool during the summer, thanks to solid stone walls and shutters, the house is beautifully warm during the winter thanks to oil-fired central heating and a woodburning stove. Water is heated by a recently installed and highly efficient electrical immersion heater which also has an economy switch for those who wish to use it. There is garaging for two cars.
Just to the left of the large oak front door is a patio with a traditional wooden bench (other outdoor chairs are also to hand). An ideal place to take the evening sun.
The kitchen is simple but spacious and offers a superb view across the terraced gardens to the River Yonne. It has recently laid terracotta flooring, a large new fridge/freezer and new cooker, plus all the pans, crockery, cutlery and glasses that you could need. In addition, there is an electric hand blender as well as a "pierrade" for grilling and an electric kettle. Just off the kitchen is a utility room with another fridge for chilling beer, wine and cheese, plus a new washing machine. There is also a third WC on this floor.
The dining room features three double french windows which lead onto a large balcony, again with a view of the Yonne and, for very early risers, the sun as it slowly lifts itself above the wooded rocky outcrop beyond the river. By the windows is a large family table. There is also a Godin Colonial woodburning stove.
Off this is a double bedroom (see below) which is recently carpeted, has two built-in wardrobes, a full length mirror, round table as well as a chest of drawers, bedside tables and lights. There is also a cot which can be made available should you wish.
Upstairs, there are two separate tiled and fitted bathrooms, one with a recently installed built-in shower, sink and WC, the other with a new bath, large sink and further WC.
The first upstairs bedroom has two single beds and a fitted wardrobe, the second has one single bed. Beyond this is a massive reception room of 70 square metres, dominated by a large cheminée and featuring the original oak vaulting beams. Pride of place is taken by a conservatoire-sized grand piano (we would ask you not to let children - or adults - use this as a toy). If you love music, you are very welcome to play it. There is also a full size professional table tennis table for those who lean more towards sport.
Stroll down through the terraced gardens or through the orchard and you come to the river bank. There you'll find the "house" boat. This is solid and flat bottomed and therefore very safe. Needless to say, you will undoubtedly want to supervise young children because the water in the centre of the river can be up to six metres deep. In this boat, you can either row to the nearest village, Châtel-Censoir, or cross to the other side of the river where you can moor and enjoy the beach from which the inhabitants of Magny swim and where they like to relax after lunch.
Wander into Châtel-Censoir to buy your baguettes, to check out the Thursday market, or to play tennis on the hard courts - or row there if you have the energy!
From the front of Le Moulin Magny, you can walk or cycle in any one of three directions which will take you through fields into forest or to the villages of Merry and Saussois (famous for its rock climbing and popular for its restaurant).
Cycle or motor into Vezelay - 15 kms away and a picturesque route - or simply sit near a lock on the Canal du Nivernais and watch the world go by.
