Only 1-1/2 hours from Athens by high-speed ferry, the island of Hydra is a favorite weekend getaway for that city's elite. When you disembark at the bustling port, you will find virtually no motor vehicles -- in fact, donkeys provide the local taxi service. In the picturesque main town, long popular with artists, just wandering through the maze of narrow streets can be an adventure. (Comfortable shoes are a must for strolling the cobblestone streets and steps.) Island life centers around the harbor, which boasts numerous restaurants where you can enjoy a glass of local wine and delicious seafood. A water taxi can convey you to a sandy beach, and the island's rustic interior is ideal for walking, especially in spring or fall when wildflowers are in bloom. For day trips further afield, ferries go on from Hydra to other islands.
THE PROPERTIES : When you arrive, the caretaker will meet you at the port (with a donkey to carry your luggage), and guide you up the 200 or so meandering steps to Villa Lilia, which enjoys one of the island's most spectacular views. Recently renovated, the villa is built in two wings, one comprising the main living areas, the other comprising the bedrooms. Walled in for privacy, the wings surround a courtyard with a sunny terrace and small swimming pool -- a rare feature. A larger, shaded terrace serves as an outdoor living area, and enjoys sweeping views of the village, the sea, and the mainland in the distance. There is a pretty garden with orange, almond, olive and fig trees on multi-level terraces. The villa's exterior is attractive -- it is the only pink house in the village -- and the interiors are comfortably furnished in typical Greek island style. The steps and terracing at the villa are unfriendly for toddlers or for people with arthritis or other mobility limitations.
INTERIORS : 4 bedrooms - two with double beds, and two with twin-beds, 3 bathrooms (one with an outdoor shower), living room, study/loft, dining area, fully equipped kitchen and terraces. The furnishings are simple but attractive. There is heat and two fireplaces, making the villa ideal for winter visitors as well.
