Luberon near Lacoste/ Menerbes; 20 miles East of Avignon
sleeps up to: 8
This holiday villa is perfect for families who love lazy days round the pool, but also want to be in the most delightful corner of Provence – the Luberon valley. The villa is right in the ‘Golden Triangle’ between the famous Luberon villages of Menerbes and Lacoste, and is close to the other medieval hilltop villages that make the area so sought after: Bonnieux, Gordes, Roussillon, Goult, Lourmarin, Oppede-le-Vieux, etc. All are officially members of The Most Beautiful Villages of France, and a short drive or cycle away. The villa is set in a garden amid pine trees where the quiet is only punctuated by the cicadas in the summer.
The kitchen and living room both open onto the terrace with pool, through three sets of French doors, so there is a sense of the house and garden merging into one – this is great because in the long, glorious summers of Provence you only want to go indoors to cook and sleep!
The nearest village is Lacoste, 3 km away, still dominated by the Marquis de Sade’s castle. Here in the winding streets you can get your baguettes and croissants, buy groceries, and choose from 3 restaurants. 5 km the other way is the picture-postcard village of Menerbes, where Peter Mayle came to write ‘A Year in Provence’. Everything you read about in his book is right here: the lavender-scented landscapes; daily markets overflowing with local produce that actually tastes of something; the charming Provencal people; hilltop villages rising above the sea of vineyards and sunflowers; outstanding food and wine; and the sensational quality of light that has always brought painters and poets here. In Provence, everything simply tastes, smells, and looks better than at home. And it’s all right on your doorstep.
