The terraced gardens and flower beds that surround this attractively dignified house lend it a certain formality that contrasts interestingly with the otherwise quite rugged appearance of this hillside.The owners have made good use of old bricks and reclaimed stone in the fabric of the house, giving it a sense of continuity and maturity. Comfortable sofas, well-stocked bookshelves and well-chosen paintings and objects from the owners’ home in England contribute to the settled and intimate charm of the villa. The kitchen has an open ‘window’ overlooking the sitting rooms so that no-one need be left out of the conversation when putting a meal together, but on the other hand several quite separate balconies and terraces mean that anyone who wants some quiet time on their own will be spoiled for choice. There is a beautiful shady loggia, an extension of the kitchen, for outdoor meals, and the main terrace is furnished with comfortable steamer chairs that are perfectly in keeping with the gracious atmosphere of the villa. The swimming pool, gated for security, is on a slightly lower level, with its own paved terrace for sunbathing. The views are magical, down over silver-leaved olive trees to an enchanting little bay below, just ten minutes’ walk away. Kalami, with its useful shops, tavernas and excellent water sports centre, is also ten minutes’ walk away, while a visit to the nearby bay of Agni, with its waterside tavernas and excellent food, should not be missed.
