Nestling in an unspoilt valley, less than three miles from Torquay and the sea, is the cluster of thatched cob cottages that form the conservation village of Coffinswell - so picturesque it was once featured on the cover of a box of famous brand chocolates.
A rural backwater, yet only a few minutes' drive from the seaside attractions of the English Riviera, Coffinswell Court, sited on an ancient salt track, has medieval origins and was once the local courthouse as well as a large prosperous farm. The fine range of old farm buildings have been imaginatively converted into three spacious cottages grouped around an ancient cobbled courtyard, forming a quadrangle with Coffinswell Court (now the Owners' home).
The cottages have been fully modernised including double-glazing, but preserve a wealth of original features including exposed stonework, beams and roof trusses. They are furnished to a very high standard with professionally designed soft furnishings and all modern conveniences. With ample parking and shared garden areas, the immediate surroundings form a very secure and pleasant environment. There are fine views over open countryside to Dartmoor and the sunsets over Haytor rocks can be quite spectacular. Within a few steps is the thatched Linney Inn, renowned throughout the area for fine food and charming atmosphere.
This cottage the largest of three properties, has reversed accommodation with the sitting-room and kitchen/diner on the first floor. One of the twin bedrooms is also on this floor, with the remaining bedrooms downstairs. The attractive sitting-room has a vaulted ceiling enhanced by the original beams and trusses. Very comfortably furnished, there are French doors to the pretty enclosed garden (the house is built on a slope so the garden is on the same level). With its bright kitchen boasting all mod-cons, The Butter House is a charming and spacious cottage.
