The house

This fine country house is set on 10 acres of beautiful countryside, just 26 miles from Edinburgh (a 30-40 minute drive). Built in 1832, the home is of great architectural merit. Marble floors, mullioned windows, and a three-story tower create an atmosphere of baronial grandeur. The house was once the home of the family of a 19th-century prime minister and later became a country house hotel. It is within walking distance of the pretty market town of Biggar, with its quaint shops and restaurants. It is 17 miles to the town of Peebles and 32 to the historic city of Glasgow. The grounds are extensive and very private. From the impressive entrance gates, a sweeping drive leads up to the house and the fully enclosed grounds, which include a manicured lawn, woods, and a paddock and stable. The lovely countryside of the Scottish borders is at your doorstep. You can enjoy tennis and croquet on the lawn, wonderful country walks, golf (there are several courses nearby), shooting, riding, fishing—all the usual pursuits that the Scottish border country is renowned for. The house has been fully modernized, while retaining its period details and magnificent, well-proportioned rooms. The reception rooms and dining rooms are ideal for entertaining, and the large reception hall with minstrel gallery is ideal for parties, weddings, family reunions, or corporate retreats. The house has been beautifully decorated with luxurious fabrics, wallpapers, and elegant furnishings. It comprises 8 beautifully decorated bedrooms, 9 bathrooms, a relaxing family room with Sky TV and DVD player, a billiards/pool room, a music room complete with a drum kit and a piano, a large, elegant formal living room with open fireplace, a formal dining room, and a fully equipped, very spacious kitchen with a large dining table for informal meals. The high-quality appliances include an Aga oven and gas stovetop; a woodburning stove provides a warm, cosy environment. The formal dining room can easily seat up to 15 and features an open fireplace and stunning views over the Hartree Hills. For larger parties, the billiard room can accommodate over 30 dinner guests. The large gravel drive can also be used as an area to stage larger events.
