Once the centre of the olive business in Melegís and the surrounding area, this converted mill house now offers a very special and unusual holiday retreat.
A great deal of thought has gone into the design for comfort and use of space which is very evident as soon as you enter the property.
On arrival at the parking area just outside the main entrance, two large timber doors lead into a private courtyard where the lovely swimming pool is located within a surrounding terrace and verandah, all of which can be illuminated at night. This central patio is split-level, with the pool terrace on the lower level; the upper level has a dining terrace adjacent to the kitchen, with a large table made from the three original conical millstones. There is plenty of space for those who prefer to laze in the sun and for those who prefer the cool of the shade.
Across the courtyard is the main entry into the mill house where a large round dining table (the original millstone base) and various pieces of old press machinery remind one of its former use. The high beamed ceiling - with an amazing light fitting above the dining table, the wall fountain and the 2m high, recycled olive oil jars (tinajas) decoratively balance the large space whilst defining the dining hall area from the spacious living area, with its sunken TV/music area in the shape of a mini-amphitheatre. At the other end of the living area, two more impressive tinajas frame the fireplace.
The lighting has been designed to enable the creation of three different moods. Off the dining area, an Arab arched colonnade leads to the kitchen and a spiral staircase going up to the master bedroom, with replica African bed, ensuite bathroom, open wardrobe, and a gallery overlooking the dining hall.
Going back outside to the upper terrace, french doors open into a large double bedroom with colour-washed walls, open fireplace and a bathroom which is shared by a twin bedroom. From here a step leads down to a passageway that takes you back to the lower hallway by the kitchen. On the first floor there is another twin bedroom and the third double bedroom with french windows that open onto a terrace overlooking the pool, with amazing views over the orange groves and surrounding countryside. This terrace extends around the house, passing the twin bedroom, leading to a larger terrace located outside the master bedroom. Throughout the house there are Arab and Moroccan tiles and furnishings, including restored iron beds, and the property is a pure delight for a large family or a group of friends who will appreciate the quality and history.
