Wonderful rambling 6 bedroom Victorian family house in Kensington
This wonderful rambling house is owned by a writer who wanted to create a country house in London for her 4 young musical daughters. The result is a spectacular mix of English style: antique furniture, walls covered with original paintings and prints, grand piano and harmonium, some 7,000 books - and comfortable family living: huge family kitchen, comfortable family room and lovely garden.
The house is on quite a busy road but as it's well set back and has good double glazing on the road side, once inside you'd never know. Nearest tube stations are Kensington Olympia (District line and trains direct from Gatwick Airport) 2 minutes walk, and Shepherd's Bush (Central line) 5 minutes away.
The accommodation comfortably sleeps 10 people in 4 double bedrooms and 2 singles. There are 3 bathrooms.
This is an ideal place to stay for a family reunion, a long family holiday in London or a visiting small special interest group.
Built in the 1860s this light and airy house arranged over 4 floors retains many of its original Victorian features: 14 ft high ceilings with beautiful moldings, original floor tiles in the hall and even an original Victorian lavatory! It has of course been fully modernised and brought into the 21st century.
On the lower ground floor is a huge farmhouse style kitchen (21ft6 x 17ft9, 6.5m x 5.4m) with an Aga cooker and all the normal appliances including an American style fridge. There's seating for at least 12 round the antique pine kitchen table. French doors give on to a small private garden with a little fountain and BBQ. This opens onto big well tended communal gardens running the length of the block and full of roses and London plane trees. Also on this floor is a formal dining room (19ft8 x 15ft9, 6.0m x 4.8m) seating 10/12 round an antique oak refectory table and also containing an upright piano and harmonium, and a laundry/utility room.
The ground floor has the entrance hall off which there is a small loo. A small study overlooks the gardens as does the large (22ft6 x 15ft, 6.9m x 4.6m) formal drawing room with its grand piano and vast fireplace - this can be used in the winter to burn logs and also keep your toast and muffins warm in the unusual "crumpet oven" below the mantelpiece. Also on this floor is the large comfortable family sitting room (20ft6 x 14ft, 6.25m x 4.3m) with books, TV, VCR and video (many videos, DVDs and CDs) and another fireplace. There's a computer in this room with broadband internet connection which you are welcome to use.
On the first floor are two enormous (22ft6 x 15ft, 6.9m x 4.6m) double bedrooms both with en suite bathrooms and 5ft antique beds.
The top floor has 2 smaller double bedrooms (5ft and 4ft6 beds) and 2 single bedrooms sharing a big bathroom with bath and power shower.
The house is less than 5 minutes walk from lovely Holland Park. There's a convenience store less than a minute way and good restaurants (Thai, Italian and Iranian) less than 3 minutes walk. Kensington High Street with its excellent shopping is within 10 minutes.
The owner's 7 seater Ford Galaxy car (complete with resident's parking permit) may also be available to rent at the same time as the house. Please ask if you are interested.
