The La Cruz apartments are located next to the San Juan Gate (the only surviving gate through the San Juan City Wall), La Fortaleza ( the governor's mansion), between the award winning El Convento Hotel, and La Casa Blanca (former residence of San Juan's first appointed governor). The famed explorer, Juan Ponce de Leon, originally built la Casa Blanca. In addition to its famous locale, The La Cruz Apartments enjoy a splendid view of San Juan Harbor, the oldest port in the Caribbean rumored to hold the treasures of many sunken Spanish galleons, and stories of many famous battles.
Within walking distance of La Cruz Apartments are excellent restaurants, a diverse selection of open air bars, shopping, art galleries, museums, and two large National Parks containing the imposing and impenetrable fortresses, Fuerte San Felipe del Morro and La Fuerte San Cristobal. The fortresses built by the Spanish Empire, protect the valuable San Juan Harbor, and the city of San Juan. These forts were never captured by any foreign presence until the US invasion of 1898. From their high panoramic vistas, one can feel Puerto Rico's warm ocean breezes, and see the beaches our island is famed for around the world.
The historic churches, fortresses, and squares of Old San Juan represent some of the Caribbean's most priceless architectural treasures, including several of the oldest surviving European structures in the New World. A few years ago, the United Nations designated Old San Juan a World Heritage Site, a distinction placing Old San Juan in a selected group of landmarks such as the Taj Mahal.
