Hidden away in a lush valley near the small village of Agia Triada, this fairly simple but utterly charming cottage is perfect for romantic couples, nature lovers and seekers of unadulterated rest and relaxation.
The cottage's rural setting and the large garden that surrounds the property mean that guests here can enjoy not only complete peace and quiet, but also an enviable degree of privacy, for whilst both the house and the pool are blessed with open country views towards a small ravine at the bottom of the garden, it is not overlooked by any close neighbours.
The cottage itself is very pretty, with mellow ceramic roof tiles, walls washed in a warm shade of yellow and doors and window frames painted in a classic Aegean blue. Inside, there is plenty of rustic charm and character, and whilst the interiors are not overly luxurious, they are certainly comfortable and spacious enough for a family, and both bedrooms benefit from air-conditioning. Gleaming pine floors and a large panorama window facing the pool make the living-dining room instantly inviting, and a quirky touch is the old vintage radio that doubles as a stand for the small TV set.
The kitchen is open plan and has a full cooker, a microwave oven and a fridge- freezer. Also on the ground floor, there is a compact double bedroom, and a rather attractive bathroom with a corner bath and an unusual vaulted ceiling.
Stairs lead up from the lounge to the large bedroom under the eaves, which has an antique double bed and two singles beds, as well as an en suite shower room.
Traditional furnishings throughout the house enhance the original charm of the cottage and befit its idyllic country setting. A less traditional feature, but one which is nevertheless utterly welcome, is the addition of a private swimming pool, surrounded by a terracotta-paved terrace where you can idle away sunny days just drinking in the view and listening to the sounds of the breeze, the cicadas, and the songbirds in the trees.
Should you be prepared to temporarily forsake your privacy for the sake of some good Cretan home cooking, there are several unpretentious tavernas within a 10- 15 minute drive in the surrounding villages. If you'd rather stock up on fresh produce in order to cook at home, the nearest large supermarket is 4 km away, and the centre of Rethymnon, with its bustling market and myriad of shops catering to both locals and holidaymakers, can be reached by car in under 20 minutes.
Closer still are the beaches to the east of Rethymnon, although many guests may well prefer to spend their days luxuriating in the privacy and tranquillity of their private pool
