This secluded setting is near the attractive town of Saintes, where there are many museums, the Abbey des Dames plus Roman walls - this being an old Roman city with arenas. The beaches of Meschers and Royan are within easy reach as are the distilleries of Cognac and the pretty Charente river; here pleasant strolls can be taken along the banks, with a towpath walk leading to Bourg-Charente and its fine castle. The écomusée at Cognac provides an interesting insight into the history of the distillation process, with a welcome tasting session at the end. There are many lovely churches and chateaux to explore by car, with the ancient hamlet of Richemont a delight, affording an ideal base for paddling in the River Antenne.
While touring this lovely region, be sure to look out for signs advertising Pineau de Charente; best served chilled as an aperitif, this local liqueur is also much loved by locals, and used in many delicious recipies.
