Mykonos may be the classic Greek island, famous for its picturesque windmills and clusters of whitewashed houses set against the background of the blue Aegean. Set in the middle of the Aegean Sea, Mykonos is easily reached by ferry or by daily 30-minute flights from Athens. This sun-drenched island offers beautiful sandy beaches, many with facilities for windsurfing and waterskiing. The best beaches and one or two popular nude beaches are located outside of the town, and are accessible by bus, taxi, rented car or bicycle. After a relaxing day on the beach, you can dine at one of the island's many restaurants -- then sample the nightclubs and discover why Mykonos enjoys a worldwide reputation for hedonistic nightlife. Mykonos is also an ideal base for excursions to nearby islands such as Delos, the site of some fascinating temple ruins.
