This magnificent property is a fine example of a 15th Century Irish keep or tower house. Once through its medieval entrance arch, one is transported back in time through turbulent centuries of Irish history. From its imposing position, overlooking the River Shannon and surrounding farmland, it is just 3 miles to a village, with its famous abbey and 15 minutes to Shannon Airport. This is a region renowned for its historic interest and with many other castles, fortresses and keeps to visit. Opportunities for fishing, hunting, riding and golf also abound. There is easy access to the coast and the beautiful areas around Galway, Connemara and the Burren, an austere and rocky plateau, famous for its unique array of mediterranean and alpine plants. The castle has been exquisitely restored by its current owners, retaining its traditional atmosphere and adding modern comforts. Features include oak ceiling beams, flagstone flooring, a medieval-style dining room, a living room with minstrel's gallery and inglenook fireplace, and beautiful antiques throughout. There are a television, stereo system, a telephone/fax and underfloor heating. The main castle has 4 bedrooms sleeping 8: 1 double 4-poster bedroom, 1 king size bedroom that can be converted to twin beds, 1 queen 4-poster bedroom & a king 4-poster bed - 2 bathrooms An additional 6 people can be accommodated in the adjacent newly-renovated Coach House - 3 bedrooms: the master bedroom has a queen bed, 1 twin bedroom & 1 standard double bed - 3 bathrooms If you book the castle and coach house together, additional dinnerware and dining chairs will be added in the castle so everyone can dine together. Regretably, the Castle is not accessible to any traveler who has even mild limitations of mobility or vision. The ancient spiral stairway is steep and the stone steps have worn over the centuries so that they slant downward a bit. The Coach House is accessible to anyone who can manage an interior stairway. There is no bathroom on the main floor of the Coach House.
